First Parish Staff

Minister, Catherine Cullen
Catherine joined us in August, 2004, bringing an abundance of spiritual energy and practical enthusiasm. Before coming to First Parish, she served as Interim Minister in Wakefield, R.I., as Summer Minister for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Reading and as a student minister at First Parish Brewster, Massachusetts. Previously, she was an attorney, political activist, community organizer, elected town official and a sailor (she stills sails!). She and her husband David Cutler have a blended family of six children (and one recently added granddaughter who just happens to be named Catherine). They live in Duxbury with their youngest child, Becky, who loves soccer, swimming, sailing (to her mom's delight) and church school at First Parish Church.
Like many UUs, Catherine made her way to our faith tradition as an adult, having been raised in the Catholic Church. She understands the sometimes difficult journey to finding a church home that is spiritual but not religious in the traditional sense, and she is always available to talk about how Unitarian Universalism's pluralistic liberal tradition might fit your spiritual needs.
You may contact her at 781-934-6532 or Minister's email.  Click here for Office Hours

Religious Education Director, Sunsue Fleming

Sunsue has been Director of Religious Education at First Parish Church since 1999. She previously served UU Churches in Quincy, Plymouth and Bridgewater Massachusetts. She has been active within the district and larger denomination, taking on leadership responsibilities. Sunsue developed and led a week-long adult workshop at Star Island entitled “Spirit in Motion.”  She has also led workshops in liturgical dance at various events throughout the district. During her recent sabbatical, she worked on producing a DVD on liturgical dance, among other activities.  She is the mother of four children, all of whom are young adults now active within our faith.  You may contact her at sunsue@verizon.net.

Music Director, Edwin Swanborn:

Ed is a nationally known harpsichordist and organist, having made solo and chamber music appearances throughout North America, Europe and in Israel. He studied with Dr. Anthony Newman at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and participated in master classes with Gustav Leonhardt and Anton Heiller. From 1977 to 1990, he was Artistic Director of the acclaimed Candlelight Concert Series at First Parish Church. He is pianist for the Zamir Chorale of Boston and serves on the music staff of Northeastern University.

He has recorded the Organ Works of J. L. Krebs (Northeastern Records compact disk) and may  also be heard on five CDs of sonatas by J.M. Leclair, G.F. Handel, Michel Blavet and J. S. Bach, recorded with flutist Robert Stallman (VAI Records). He has also recorded C.P.E. Bach flute sonatas with Boston

Symphony Orchestra flutist Fenwick Smith (Revere Records). Recently released on Boston Records are works for oboe and harpsichord  recorded with BSO oboist Wayne Rapier.

As director of First Parish's senior choir, Ed has made the church's annual Christmas Eve service one of the area's best-known liturgical musical events.  You may contact him at EdwSwan@aol.com.

Church Administrator, Marty Kearns

Marty came to us in January of 2008, her latest step in a career that has included serving 10 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, working in the communications sector for Raytheon, office management for several local businesses and a stint as a registrar for the South Shore Conservatory's Duxbury Campus.  She is a working mom and avid runner and is active in the community as a docent at the Duxbury Art Complex Museum, as well as in the Chandler School PTA and the Duxbury Free Library.  In her spare time, she is also an "on call" certified 911 dispatcher for the Duxbury Police Department.  She may be reached at the church office at (781)934-6532, ext. 2, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. or by email at uuduxbury@verizon.net"

Ministerial Intern, Carie Johnsen

Carie will be with us on a part-time basis through June, 2009, working to develop her skills as a parish minister. She is a seminary student at Harvard Divinity School and a candidate for Unitarian Universalist ordination.  Her call to ministry was seeded in her home congregation, First Parish Church in Brewster, where she has been an active member for more than 14 years. Carie describes her journey into ministry as  reluctant but inevitable, reluctant in that she has preferred the less public role of a social worker, but inevitable in that she has always cared deeply about her human sisters and brothers and felt drawn to serve them.  She has recently completed a one-year internship with the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, where she focused on creating connections and building bridges between the work of UUSC, the Unitarian Universalist faith, and the spiritual lives of individual UU’s.
